SPLINTERS Will Open At Neptune Theatre

Splinters to Screen at Neptune Theatre

What a year it has been. Our favourite performers forced to cancel their shows, our beloved performance houses forced into darkness. What a joy it is now to see things here in our Atlantic Bubble make their way back to life – with more live dates being announced and theatres welcoming back eager audiences. That’s why we’re ever so pleased to announce Thom Fitzgerald’s award-winning film SPLINTERS will open at Neptune Theatre.

Now I grant you that’s not the usual fare to be found at Neptune, but if you’re lucky enough to score the theatrical run of a Fitzgerald film – fantastic! And if it just happens to have been filmed right here in Nova Scotia… with an all EAST COAST cast – well that’s an offer you can’t refuse.

The box-office is open and In-theatre screenings will run from October 23rd to November 8th. The virtual film screening can be pre-ordered from anywhere in Nova Scotia at

We do hope you’ll take the opportunity to see this wonderful film and support the amazing Neptune Theatre too!

Official Press Release

Halifax’s Neptune Theatre to reopen as a temporary cinema on October 23rd with SPLINTERS

The Neptune Theatre, the largest professional theatre company in Atlantic Canada, will be reopening on Friday, October 23rd as a temporary cinema after being closed since the spring. The theatre will open with a limited run of SPLINTERS, a film directed by Thom Fitzgerald and starring an all east coast cast. The film was shot nearby in the Annapolis Valley.

SPLINTERS to open at Neptune Theatre October 23, 2020

SPLINTERS was the Opening Night Gala Presentation for the FIN Atlantic International Film Festival and has been part of numerous other film festivals, including TIFF. It stars Sofia Banzhaf (CLOSET MONSTER), Shelley Thompson (Trailer Park Boys), Bailey Maughan (OUTLANDER, Mr. D) and Callum Dunphy (Sex & Violence). The film is written and directed by Thom Fitzgerald (past winner of Best Canadian Feature at TIFF for THE HANGING GARDEN) and it is based on the stage play by Lee-Anne Poole.

The film will also be available virtually on Neptune’s streaming platform NEPTUNE AT HOME. Fitzgerald sees Neptune at Home as an opportunity for all Nova Scotians to help support the Neptune Theatre to survive the global pandemic. “We can’t overestimate the impact the shutdown has had on the live theatre company,” Fitzgerald said, “the proceeds of this film engagement will benefit Neptune and it’s continuing operation, and have more positive impact on the community than an ordinary run at a cinema.”

“We are very excited to welcome a physically-distance audience back into the theatre,” says Neptune’s artistic director, Jeremy Webb. “With the theatre closed to full stage production right now due to COVID-19 restrictions, it’s a pleasure to welcome people back into the building safely for this presentation.”

Tickets go on sale at the Neptune Theatre Box Office on Friday, October 16th. In-theatre screenings will run October 23rd to November 8th. The virtual film screening can be pre-ordered from anywhere in Nova Scotia at

Splinters a Thom Fitzgerald Film

Belle returns to her rural Nova Scotia home for her father’s funeral. Having caused her mother Nancy considerable consternation when she came out as a lesbian teen, Belle is now desperate to keep secret from her mother that she’s been in a relationship with a man for the last two years.

Sofia Banzhaf (CLOSET MONSTER) stars in the leading role as Belle, a young woman whose sexual identity is fluid. Shelley Thompson (Trailer Park Boys) stars as Belle’s traditionalist mother Nancy. Bailey Maughan and Callum Dunphy round out the starring cast. Thompson and Maughan won ACTRA Awards for their performances in the film, and Thompson won the Best Actress Prize at the Atlantic Film Festival. The film won the Screen Nova Scotia Awards for Best Feature Film.
