Our chats will be just that very conversational, not entirely sensible and with any luck totally enjoyableβ¦ and oh my goodness this one was that and then some. How fantastic it was to connect with this phenomenal NL Fella β his stellar musicianship and his wonderful wit came across my SEA AND BE SCENE radar well over a decade ago and Iβve been a fan of the man ever since. And while he hangs his hat (along with his Doctorate and Masters Degrees) on Vancouver Island β what with his day job as Associate Professor of Jazz Studies at the University of Victoria,Β I have his many musical friends from the homeland to thank (the likes of Alan Doyle and Greg Hawco) for introducing me to his stellar skills on the trumpet and guitar. Indeed, heβs one of Canadaβs top jazz musicians having performed on stages all over the planet. An award-winning sideman to be sure of it with over 50 credits on albums by everyone from NL Supergroups Hey Rosetta! and Great Big Sea to pop/rock legend and Monkeyβs alum Mickey Dolenz β but itβs his brand new solo work weβre celebrating today.Β A project entitled LULL: Sounds for Sleep β a brilliant soundscape β all composed, performed and produced by the βfearless sonic explorerβ himself. So weβll talk about this wondrous new work and so much more β including his less is more approach to these tracks, his sentiments on studio time and his philosophy on making music for film and television.Β Plus weβll get to 1st Things First play a way-too-long-overdue round of INsights IN 10 and spin as many of his tunes as we can squeeze into the hour.Β So with all that ahead we best get to it. Hereβs my conversation with the one and only Patrick Boyle. (youβll find the player at the bottom of the post)
