So excited for the return of CBC’s heartwarming and hilarious SON OF CRITCH. Be sure to tune in on Tuesday, January 7th at 8:30 p.m. ET (9 NT) on CBC TV as the entire Critch clan and their pals premiere Season 4. Filmed entirely in Newfoundland the ensemble series has has enjoyed great critical acclaim along with a growing fan base, in fact just scored the Cogeco Fund Audience Choice Award at the 2024 Canadian Screen Awards.
The 4th season of SON OF CRITCH picks up with Mark (played by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth) just starting High School along with his now girlfriend Fox (played by Sophia Powers) and best friend Ritchie (played by Mark Ezekiel Rivera.) Naturally, his new school brings a whole new set of sidesplitting and character-building challenges along with some great new faces (and SABS favourites) to the supporting cast roster including Sean Panting as the short bus driver and Shawn Doyle as the legendary IRL drama teacher Mr. (Kevin) Lewis.

Of course, the comedy ensues on the home front too with Mike Jr. (played by Colton Gobbo) expanding his role in radio, Mike Sr. (played by Mark Critch) struggling to keep a hold of his place in the world of broadcast and Pop (played by Malcolm McDowell) longing for the good old days in more ways than one. Actress Claire Rankin returns as Mary Critch and – as we discovered during our latest episode of SEA AND BE SCENE… And HEARD – it’s a character she truly loves playing amidst a cast and crew she absolutely adores. You can listen to the podcast version of that broadcast here.
You can stream episodes of SON OF CRITCH including seasons 1, 2 and 3 along with those from Season 4 as they are released every Tuesday on their CBC GEM page here. And be sure to like and follow them on Instagram and on Facebook too.
Here’s the Official Word from CBC on SON OF CRITCH Season 4
Based on the award-winning, best-selling memoir from Mark Critch (host of CBC’s long-running This Hour Has 22 Minutes), SON OF A CRITCH is a heartfelt window into the life of now 14-year-old Mark – much older than his years – coming of age in St. John’s, Newfoundland.
Season four is all about passion. From Mark’s relentless pursuit of his creative dreams to his burgeoning romance with Fox, we’ll watch as he devotedly navigates a quickly growing world. It’s a world filled with new promise, potential and love. And he won’t be alone. Every member of his household will also be chasing something greater. Mike Jr. will ferociously pursue his radio career—growing with gusto—until he finds himself in direct competition with his father when he joins Magic 97, the new FM station. Pop, now a bedroom empty-nester, will have a renewed drive to keep his relationship with Mark as special as it’s always been – now that there’s a literal and metaphoric wall between them. Mary will use menopause and the resulting mid-life crisis as a launching point for a new era of personal growth (travel, new friendships…). Mike Sr. will struggle to keep himself relevant in a world that seems to be passing him by. As Mark forms his original sketch comedy troupe Cat Fud, Ritche will chase his musical dreams with his first band, Potato Bug. And, Fox will be very busy working a new job, navigating her new relationship with Mark, and fighting the powers-that-be at her new school – all while continuing to be the much needed glue for a family constantly being pulled at from all ends.
