It sure is wonderful to see this favourite old Lunenburg spot get a brand new life – infused with incredible flavours and propelled by spectacular spirit.

According to the Government of Canada’s Library and Archives “Over 2000 Germans arrived in Nova Scotia between 1750 and 1752 when they were recruited for settlement of British holdings. In 1753 some of these settlers established the town of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.” source

Indeed the German heritage is strong here on the South Shore of the Province – so naturally, folks were thrilled to see the Old Black Forest re-open along the Lighthouse Route heading into Lunenburg this past March. With the same name yes – but with a completely fresh approach to celebrating traditional German dishes including Schnitzel, Käsespätzle, Maultaschen, and their homemade Bratwurst.

Those Brats by the way are made with local ingredients. Chef Nathan Guggenheimer (Co-owner/Ring Leader of Good Times) is always on a mission to not only use local, but source local. That’s the case for their pretzels from Boulangerie la Vendeenne in Blockhouse, and their forthcoming signature brew from the good folks at Tanner & Co. Brewing in Chester Basin.

Rest assured they’ve got traditional desserts too – from German Cheesecake to a heavenly ice cream called Heiße Liebe and you better believe they’ve got beautiful Black Forest Cake complete with Barrelling Tide Cherry Liqueur from Port Williams in the Annapolis Valley.

Be sure to follow them on Instagram at @theoldblackforest and you’ll see a steady stream of tasty shots, plenty of cool contests, and their weekly installments of ’Learn German with Dylan Monday!’ That’s when their Sous Chef Dylan Dearing gets a great lesson in the language from Chef Sivlio Schatz – great stuff indeed.

It sure is wonderful to see this favourite old spot get a brand new life – infused with incredible flavours and propelled by spectacular spirit. Oh they have a passion for German food alright and all they’re having all kinds of fun while their at it.
